Glass Channel Kits are a critical structural component within frameless balustrade systems, providing the primary interface between the glass panel and the supporting structure. At IMS, these kits are supplied for projects where controlled load transfer, installation accuracy and long-term system stability are essential requirements rather than secondary considerations.
Designed to integrate directly with a frameless glass balustrade channel, each kit combines the channel profile with matched fixing and support components to create a repeatable, technically sound installation. This approach reduces variability on site and ensures that the performance of the balustrade is governed by the system design rather than installer interpretation.
Installation configurations
IMS Glass Channel Kits are suitable for both base-mounted and side-mounted installations, allowing the system to be specified in line with structural constraints and architectural intent.
- Base-mounted installations fix the channel directly into the top of a slab or structural deck. This configuration is commonly used where the balustrade sits on the finished surface and where direct vertical load transfer into the structure is required.
- Side-mounted installations attach the channel to the face of a slab or edge beam. This approach is often specified where floor finishes must remain uninterrupted or where maximising usable floor area is a design priority.
Defining the mounting configuration at specification stage helps ensure correct fixing selection, load performance and installation sequencing.
In a frameless balustrade arrangement, the base channel is responsible for resisting lateral loads applied to the glass, including imposed loads from pedestrian use and environmental forces such as wind.
Performance Characteristics
- Load Management: Channel profiles and fixings are selected to support the load cases associated with residential and commercial balustrade installations in accordance with BS 6180.
- Mounting adaptability: Designed for both side-mounted and base-mounted configurations without compromising structural performance.
- Dimensional Accuracy: Precision-formed components allow consistent glass positioning and reliable alignment across long runs.
- Material Selection: Stainless steel fixings and accessories are supplied in appropriate grades for internal, sheltered or exposed environments.
- Installation Control: Pre-matched components reduce on-site adjustments and installation errors.
- System Durability: Materials and finishes are chosen to maintain mechanical performance over extended service periods.
Glass Channel Kits are specified across a wide range of environments where frameless balustrade systems are required to deliver both structural performance and minimal visual impact, including:
- Balconies and terraces
- Mezzanine floors and edge protection
- Stair landings and circulation areas
- Rooftop and podium-level guarding
- Commercial and public-facing interiors
They are suitable for both new-build construction and retrofit projects where existing balustrade systems are being upgraded or replaced.
