IMS are a steel stockholder, based in Essex, and are part of the Barclay & Mathieson Group, who have 15 Depots and 2 service centres nationwide. The group has over 500 employees and a turnover of almost £200 million. We traditionally sell general steels into the construction industry, and run a variety of processing machines in Shoeburyness. IMS alone employ over 150 staff at our facility and operate 24 hours per day.

We operate shotblast and painting, saw cutting, drilling, plasma Cutting, gas cutting, folding and shearing in house.

Managing Director (Sowerby Bridge)

Abram Pulmans are a brand part of the Barclay & Mathieson Ltd group. The business operates from a service centre in Sowerby Bridge and employs 65+ staff. The Managing DIrector is head of the site and oversees the commercial & operations strategy. Abram Pulmans are a margin driven business, with the availability of many processing capabilities, the company require a highly driven and motivated Managing Director who will continually improve the sites performance.

Capabilities of machinery are Cutting | CNC Drilling/ Cropping | Plasma Cutting | Oxy-Fuel Cutting | Press Brakes | Guillotines.

Distribution of product is handled by a fleet of vehicles and the site runs 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The Manager takes the lead to develop the business in all areas and must adopt a mindset of continuous improvement, in all aspects of the business.

 

Role and responsibilities

  • The Managing Director should take full ownership and control of the site and take a proactive approach to ensure that success is achieved.
  • Full P&L responsibility.
  • Deliver the annual net profit budget.
  • Annualised preparation of future budgets.
  • Take charge of all Management personnel. Including Operations Manager, Head of Sales, Transport Manager, Purchasing and credit control.
  • Ensure performance of all departments is to consistent high standard.
  • Meeting budget targets through achievement of required sales volume and margin.
  • Prepare and issue quarterly sales targets.
  • Identify new sales opportunities and progress growth of sales.
  • Prepare business plans for key strategic investment.
  • Champion health and safety culture and lead from the top attitude.
  • Support & oversee ongoing training & development of staff in each department.
  • Measure, monitor and improve on customer satisfaction.
  • Foster improved working practices and relationships between departments.
  • Ensure KPI’s are met or exceeded in each area.
  • Ensure employment is within budget headcount submitted by within the agreed annual budget.
  • Promote and drive staff morale, implementing incentives to better drive improved staff retention and reduce staff turnover.
  • Ensure department errors are reduced in line with agreed targets and procedural improvements are met.
  • Work closely with senior management team for feedback and improvement in all areas.
  • Conduct and oversee HR and disciplinary actions in line with company policy.
  • Ensure department staff are trained and qualified in machinery and operations.

Trainee Drawing Office Administrator (Shoeburyness Depot)

We’re looking for a Trainee Drawing Office Administrator to join our Production team. This position is perfect for someone who is just starting their career and is ready to learn the ins and outs of office administration within the steel industry. We are committed to your growth and will provide comprehensive training and support, including both internal mentoring and external courses, to ensure you develop the skills needed to succeed within this role. 

It’s the responsibility of the Drawing Office Administrator to efficiently import and process NC and CAD files into our steel project software. This role requires ensuring customer requirements are met, optimizing cutting patterns, and managing documentation to support our sales and production teams.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • To administer and maintain administrative systems as agreed with the Production Manager.
  • To ensure the efficient and timely operations of the administrator systems and operating procedures associated with the Production Department and the processing of materials. 
  • Import NC files provided by customers into Steel Projects software.
  • Verify and document any modifications made to customer files, providing updates to the sales team.
  • Import and clean up DXF/DWG CAD files for accurate nesting, removing unnecessary elements and saving multiple drawings as individual files.
  • Understand machine capabilities and limitations.
  • Offer solutions or alternatives to meet customer needs, including identifying suitable cutting methods (plasma, gas, or shearing).
  • Nest drilling and cutting jobs to minimize waste and optimize cutting patterns.
  • Re-nest jobs as needed to utilize offcuts effectively and reduce material waste.
  • Enter large drilling and cutting jobs into the Stockmaster system with accurate treatment and cutting details.
  • Provide detailed drilling packs, including changes made, cutting patterns, and job specifics for sales team quotations.
  • Create and manage drawings for customer approval, including any required cutting or drilling details.
  • Assist the sales team with inquiries related to machine capabilities and production feasibility.
  • Support other depots and team members with processing knowledge and Stockmaster system usage.
  • Help sales teams with large cutting lists and process these efficiently in Stockmaster.
  • Generate cutting patterns and magnets for production planning.
  • Produce and update visual boards to track job progress and manage workload.
  • Request materials from CTL and manage stock levels to ensure availability.
  • Coordinate with transport and production teams to ensure efficient handling of materials.
  • Allocate and track returned materials, updating IMS stock and paperwork accordingly.
  • Maintain Excel spreadsheets tracking optimization, material savings, and enquiry details.
  • Report monthly optimization figures to management, highlighting material saved and bars used.
  • Support the processing administrator where required.

Skills And Qualities

Production Nights Machine Operator (Shoeburyness Depot)

Role And Responsibilities 
To operate Production Machinery efficiently in order to complete job tickets as metered out by Team Leaders in a timely fashion. To achieve agreed operational and output KPI’s whilst at the same time maintaining a high quality and standard of workmanship and customer service.

 

Main Job Accountabilities

  • To load and efficiently operate machinery you have been trained in and to maintain operational efficiency as agreed with the Production Manager. 
  • To ensure the quality of production work is in line with the standards set out by the Quality Manager. 

Job Content

  • To ensure the T Card (or alternative) progress system is kept up to date in real time, so the Sales Department, Production Department and the Management team can monitor tickets in progress throughout the facility for all shifts. 
  • To ensure T Cards are moved in a timely and orderly fashion in accordance with the processing order defined by the Team Leader/Production Manager. 
  • To ensure all production processes and paperwork are completed legibly and accurately consistently and handed in to the correct departmental personnel in a timely manner. 
  • To time manage the material presented to the machine so as to ensure that work flows through each stage of the production processes in the most efficient manner. 
  • To complete the machine job accurately and prepare for dispatch in accordance with delivery requirements i.e. Banded, Labeled, & Stacked appropriately for loading. 
  • To ensure that any Technical and/or Safety bulletins for Processing Machinery distributed to each machine operative is adhered to. 
  • To ensure that data for OEE reports are completed and handed to the Team Leader/ Production Administrator so that OEE statistics can be produced accurately on a daily basis. 
  • To fully complete material quality checks 
  • To act on information produced by OEE statistics to ensure that workflow efficiencies are maximized at every opportunity. 
  • To ensure machinery is operated in line with published SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) at all times. 
  • To ensure good housekeeping is maintained throughout the Production work areas and machinery on a daily basis. This will include timely TPM (Total Preventative Maintenance) schedules are adhered to. 
  • To comply with the dress code, HSE and quality standards agreed within the company and to have personal responsibilities for the application of policies and procedures established for the department. 
  • Ensure adequate information detailing issues on the shift, machine issues, jobs in progress are relayed to the Team Leader, and Day Shift Operator.

Night Warehouse (Shoeburyness Depot)

Roles And Responsibilities

  • Generate (break down) rack locations to create space for new stock.
  • Maintain inventory controls by stowing stock away in the relevant location.
  • Prepare production orders by processing T-Cards (Material Requested); pulling materials, made ready for collection, delivered by side loader.
  • Prepare customer orders by processing delivery ticket requests; pulling materials, banding and labelling consignments, ready for vehicle loading on the night shift.

  • Correctly complete delivery tickets and return to the ticket holding area.
  • Ensure all stock discrepancies are reported to the warehouse supervisor or the stock checker.
  • Attend the weekly Warehouse Manager’s meeting.
  • Ensure PPE is worn at all times in the warehouse.
  • Maintain equipment by performing ‘Before Use Checks’ and reporting any faults, via management, to the maintenance team.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment by keeping all racking and floor areas free from waste.
  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing other tasks as specified by your line managers.
