Roof Edge Protection FAQs

Can I install roof edge protection without penetrating the waterproofing?

Yes. Freestanding counterweighted systems distribute load through roof-safe bases and do not require fixings into the membrane, making them suitable where warranties must be preserved.

What post spacing should I use?

Typical centres range from 1.5 m to 2.0 m depending on system type, exposure and any toe board requirement. Check the manufacturer data and wind calculations before finalising spans.

Do I need toe boards as well as guardrails?

Toe boards are recommended where there is a risk of tools or materials rolling off the roof or where public areas exist below. They are also useful at plant edges and near rooflights.

How do fold-down systems lock in the upright position?

Hinged uprights include positive locking hardware. When raised, the post is secured with a mechanical latch or pin, providing the same duty performance as a fixed upright.

Can I run guardrail around solar PV arrays?

Yes. Maintain manufacturer-specified clearances, avoid shading where possible and use weighted bases positioned to suit panel layout. Gate modules can create defined access points for maintenance.

What inspections are required after installation?

Carry out a documented handover inspection on completion, then periodic checks—typically annually or in line with your site’s safety regime. Inspect fixings, uprights, bases and any moving parts such as gates.

How are corners and terminations handled?

Use corner kits or adjustable elbows to maintain continuity and stiffness. Terminations can be returned to the parapet or finished with ballast arms to resist uplift at end bays.

Can systems be retrofitted to an older roof?

In most cases, yes. A survey will confirm membrane condition, load paths and any remedial work needed. Freestanding systems are often chosen for retrofit to avoid penetrations.
