Recycled Plastic Sleepers FAQs

What is the difference between plastic sleepers and timber sleepers?

Plastic sleepers are manufactured from recycled polyethylene, whereas timber sleepers are cut from treated or untreated wood. Plastic sleepers offer significantly longer service life, require no preservative treatment, and will not rot, split, or leach chemicals into surrounding soil. For garden applications, they are widely regarded as the lower-maintenance and more environmentally responsible option.

Can plastic sleepers be used for retaining walls?

Yes, plastic sleepers can be stacked and fixed to form low retaining walls for garden terracing and raised beds. For walls over two courses in height, we recommend consulting a structural engineer and using appropriate fixing and drainage provisions.

Do plastic sleepers need any ground preparation before installation?

Minimal preparation is required. Ensure the ground is reasonably level and compacted. For raised beds or borders, plastic sleepers can be placed directly on the ground. For permanent retaining applications, a layer of compacted hardcore or sharp sand will improve stability and drainage.

What sizes do plastic sleepers come in?

IMS plastic sleepers are available in a range of standard lengths and cross-section profiles to suit different landscaping requirements, from light-duty pathway edging through to heavier retaining and structural applications.

Can plastic sleepers be used as garden railway sleepers?

Yes. IMS recycled plastic sleepers are widely specified as a direct replacement for traditional timber railway sleepers in garden landscaping projects. They provide the same look and structural function as timber while removing the common drawbacks: no creosote leaching, no splintering, and no rot. This makes them particularly well suited to family gardens, planting areas, and any project where ground contact with treated timber is a concern.
